I know summer is different for different people but in the church there are a few constants. Many people like to use the summer for vacations. Some enjoy the visits of family coming to see them. There are a few folk in the summer who use the time to catch up on things as kids are home from school or work slows down. And, let us not forget that there are congregations who pick up their pace in the summer time because their ministries target populations and needs which are more present during these months.
Milner is likely a mix of these so I doubt we can say we fit neatly into one box. But, there is a schedule for us this summer which I would like to share with you. Our schedule includes a monthly gathering each month to meet, to pray, to study, and to dream. This month's meeting is on Thursday, June 22 @ 6:30pm. We will receive reports about the demographics in our neighborhood as well as a finance report. We will also recirculate the updated history document from May's congregational meeting and ask for further input. In July and August, we will meet with the question of mission and vision for Milner as a primary discussion.
Therefore, through the summer - in worship and in other places - we will be sharing more about how we can as a congregation enter the sacred space of dreaming as God's people. Milner is a light shining in SE Raleigh and God has kept us lit for a reason. Our light is God's light. The question is not whether we will be light, but what we will illumine. That is our task this summer, to discover and to make plans for illuminating the mission God has blessed us with!
